Id theft
Personal ID of a person can be any of the personal documents like passport, social security card, driving license, voter ID card or even bank credit cards. These documents are the key for the personal details of individuals and are used to secure the confidential documents or bank accounts. The criminals tend to make money or other benefits by misusing the personal ID of others. Here we see how the personal ID details are stolen by the criminals and how it affects the victims.
The criminals look for unattended documents and materials which contain the personal information of the individual. Such confidential information can be misused by the criminals in the banks and other places to prove the identity of the victim and get further details about the victim. People should never ever leave any documents unattended in public places like restaurants, movie halls or banks.
Personal ID is also prone to be stolen over phone when shared by the individual for any other reason. Criminals doing fraud by personal ID theft will have contacts in offices and banks from whom they can get the personal data of the public people. When the individual gets call from bank for any general query, the personal data may be shared without proper verification of the credibility of the call and the caller. Such disclosures of the personal data become beneficial for the criminals for the personal ID theft.
In a recent survey, it was observed that people attach tags with personal data like name and address to the baggage's while travelling. Rather than securing just the bags, this error discloses the personal ID of the traveller which can be noted down by the stranger and gets access to any of the secured area using the stolen identity. In a reputed multinational company, a stranger was caught using the business card of an employee to get the confidential details from the other employee of the organization. This kind of information theft happen because of the personal ID of an individual exposed to a stranger.
Transactions done on public computers on any websites, make the personal data store in the cache memory and can be accessed by the stranger easily. Enough care should be taken not to use the personal data in public computers which can be sniffed in such unsecured environment.
Personal ID theft can be controlled well when the data is maintained within the individual with much care and secrecy. The problem of ID theft and fraud happen only when the data is handled carelessly by people, which can be avoided by following basic tips of handling them safely.
